Requirements:

Skills Programme- Fixed Term Contract
– Grade 10/11/Grade12/Matric/ N1 – N5/ Level 2 -4

The programme gives practical exposure to candidates with the objective of providing structured experiential learning opportunities

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) – Fixed Term Contract

– National Certificate – N6 (WIL/In-service Training)
– Institutions of Higher Learning – Letter from the Institution requesting WIL (In-service training), Transcript (Academic results)

The City offers a program that combines academic learning with practical application in the workplace, where such experience is a specific requirement to obtain a formal qualification. This structured work experience, which includes clearly defined learning outcomes, is formally known as In-Service Training.

National Diploma/Diploma:

The City also offers graduate internship programs to students who have completed their qualifications at Further Education & Training (FET) Colleges or accredited institutions of higher learning. These full-time programs are designed for the purpose of skills transfer.

Graduate Internship Programme (GIP)- Fixed Term Contract

– A 3 year Diploma/National Diploma (from a registered
– University or University of Technology) or from accredited academic institution of higher learning.

– Degree

– PhD

The City offers graduate internship programs to students who have completed their qualifications at Institutions of Higher Learning (University/University of Technology). These programs can be either part-time or full-time and are designed for skills transfer, with learnerships ranging from 12 to 24 months. The additional requirements for Grade 12 may vary depending on the type of learnership.

The City also provides a vocational education and training program to bridge structured learning and work experience, facilitating the attainment of a registered qualification. This program integrates theory and workplace practice into a qualification registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

The City invites suitably qualified unemployed candidates who meet the minimum requirements to apply for the Internship Programme. Only students permanently residing within the jurisdiction of Cape Town are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to graduates from universities, technical universities, colleges, and TVET colleges within Cape Town’s jurisdiction. Interns must not be enrolled in further studies during the internship period, except for PhD and Doctoral students.

Key Performance Areas:

The City is actively training numerous recruits across various programs within the City of Cape Town. This initiative is part of the City’s commitment to addressing high youth unemployment levels and providing opportunities for skills enhancement. The Student Opportunity initiative aims to provide exposure and experience in various Directorates within the City. The skills acquired through this program will significantly enhance employment opportunities in various sectors.

Special Conditions Attached to the Opportunity:

Students must not be enrolled in further studies during the internship period, except for Work Integrated Learning Programme, PhD, and Doctoral Programmes. It must be emphasized that there is no automatic guarantee of employment upon successful completion of the program. Students may be involved in special projects and may or may not receive remuneration, depending on budget availability.

Applicants can use any computer with internet access to apply; however, smartphones are not compatible with the online application process. Applicants may use a Smart Cape computer at a City of Cape Town Library if they are a library member. To become a library member, you will need to apply for membership at a library with your ID and proof of residence.

If appointed, candidates must be available to work as rostered and are not permitted to have other employment or run a private business without the City Manager’s written permission while employed by the City.
